Renovation Planning

Is This the Year You Finally Stop Sacrificing?

As we head into the new year, I've been reflecting on the balance between dreaming big and taking small, actionable steps to make those dreams a reality.

In today's post, I want to share three connected ideas to help you approach 2025 with clarity, purpose, and—most importantly—a plan. Whether your goal is a better home, a healthier lifestyle, or more fulfillment, these concepts can help you move forward.

1. Stop Sacrificing Today for an Imaginary Tomorrow

I just read a quote by Naval Ravikant that I adore because it's the first time I've seen my objective in life described so succinctly:

"Retirement is when you stop sacrificing today for an imaginary tomorrow. When today is complete, in and of itself, you're retired."

This definition reimagines retirement—not as the day you stop working but as the moment you stop postponing your life.

This really resonates with me because I don't ever want to stop working. I love renovations and helping people get their dream homes. I plan to do this forever.

So for me, it means not delaying joy, fitness, travel, or quality time with my kids until “later.” It means finding ways to live fully now, even as I plan carefully for the future.

What about you? Does this resonate?

Ask yourself:

  • What are you sacrificing in your life—or your home—right now?
  • How would it feel to wake up every day in a space that truly supports your lifestyle now (instead of 5 years from now)?
  • Imagine how much easier it could be to get your kids out the door in the morning, host a holiday dinner, or finally feel proud to invite friends over to your house.

Maybe 2025 is the year you decide to stop sacrificing and start creating the home—and life—you deserve.

Because now is the time.

2. Why Most Resolutions Fail (and How to Beat the Odds)

Most resolutions fail because they're too vague, too ambitious, or both.

I'll never eat chips again.
I'll lose 200 pounds by June.
We'll completely renovate the house.

Sound familiar?

The problem isn't the big dream—it's the lack of a viable plan and the daily habits to execute the plan. Even smaller resolutions like “start exercising” often fall flat without a clear program to follow. You need structure: a roadmap that tells you what to do, when to do it, and how to track your progress on a daily and weekly basis.

Last week, I shared exactly how I would plan a renovation from scratch if I were starting fresh. The key takeaway? Success isn't about going big—it's about making consistent, manageable progress toward your goal, using a proven delivery framework as your guide.

3. The Answers You Seek Are in the Actions You Avoid

Here's a truth that's both powerful and uncomfortable:

Every important thing you want in life is on the other side of something you don't want to do.

  • The body you want is found in the workouts you avoid.
  • The relationships you crave are found in the hard conversations you delay.
  • The clarity you need is found in the walks you skip.
  • The home you dream of is found in the planning you're putting off.

It's tempting to believe you can think your way to a better future by sitting still and mapping it all out in your head. But real progress only happens when you take action.

What are the answers you're seeking in your life right now? Is it possible they're hiding in the actions you're avoiding?

In a time when almost everything can be outsourced, it's tempting to believe that planning your dream home is one of those items...that someone can do it all for you.

But nobody can do the squats for you.

And nobody can identify the key features, priorities, functions, and budget that truly suit you.

Is 2025 Your Year?

If 2025 is the year you'll stop sacrificing, let's make your dream home a reality.

I'm creating a free guide that breaks down exactly how I would approach Renovation Planning Academy step by step (actually week-by-week) if I were starting in January 2025. I'm making it a new bonus for you if you join RPA by January 5. (The emails will start January 6.)

It will include an email each week of 2025 that outlines your tasks so that you won't get behind or wonder what to work on each day. Just carve out 15-30 mins each day and you'll have a complete plan by this time next year, which means you'll be prepped for an easy construction phase in 2026.

Join Renovation Planning Academy by January 5 to gain access to this incredible accountability feature that will keep you on track.

THIS is how you accomplish HUGE things. Just start with a small action (joining RPA) and then take small consistent steps each week, according to a detailed plan.

I've got you covered. 😉
